Self-Sufficiency Projects

We currently have two programs serving Texans aged 18 and older in marginalized, underserved, and vulnerable groups — supporting adults with low incomes in achieving housing stability, economic empowerment, and overall well-being on the road to self-sufficiency.

Our programs work to make poverty a short chapter, not a life sentence, by identifying and removing barriers to housing access for low-income households in Bell County, Brazoria County, Dallas County, and Ellis County.

We provide the support and resources adult household members need to reach their housing, vocational, career, and financial goals.

By addressing the many needs of low-income families, our programs create a pathway to economic stability, health, and well-being — breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering empowered, thriving communities.

LHI's Self-Sufficiency Program for families with very low- to moderately-low incomes

Our Self-Sufficiency Program for residents of Bell and Ellis Counties with very low- to moderately-low incomes employs a holistic behavior modification approach that walks with every adult in the household through a step-by-step plan to break poverty's hold — housing, skills, and income, one link at a time to ensure that each family build

Our Self-Sufficiency Program for residents of Bell and Ellis Counties with very low- to moderately-low incomes employs a holistic behavior modification approach that walks with every adult in the household through a step-by-step plan to break poverty's hold — housing, skills, and income, one link at a time to ensure that each family builds a solid foundation for self-sufficiency.

This is a time-bound 24-month program — a hand up, not a hand out: participants receive rent subsidies as they take essential steps toward self-sufficiency, including case management, empowerment sessions, and individual empowerment sessions. This is a reciprocating relationship that asks for your active engagement and participation. The 24-month clock matters: step in fully while the window is open, and engage before your time runs out. The program is time-bound at 24 months — breaking the chain of poverty one link at a time, equipping and empowering Texans toward self-sufficiency — so that families graduate with a plan for life after assistance ends. As long as adult household members engage in activities and essential services, we assist with security and utility deposits, monthly rent subsidies, and/or monthly utility subsidies, depending on need.

To participate, all adults in the household who are 18 and older must be willing to actively take steps necessary to move from poverty to self-sufficiency.

To join, applicants meet income, residence, and other program requirements, and every adult in the household commits to the steps toward self-sufficiency.

The Self-Sufficiency Program for Brazoria and Dallas County Residents with Disabilities and very low- to moderately-low incomes aims to empower persons with disabilities and low incomes by providing comprehensive support services that foster economic independence, stability, and overall well-being. This holistic program focuses on education, job training, financial literacy, health and wellness, and community engagement to help participants achieve long-term self-sufficiency and improve their quality of life.

We keep housing affordable while each household works toward independence, with rent subsidies and deposits sized to the household's needs and progress, by providing security and/or utility deposits, as necessary, and providing monthly rent subsidies. The program is time-bound at 24 months — breaking the chain of poverty one link at a time, equipping and empowering Texans toward self-sufficiency — so that families graduate with a plan for life after assistance ends. The financial assistance is based on each household's needs and its progress towards self-sufficiency.

To participate, at least one adult in the household must have a documented disability, and all adults in the household who are 18 and older must be willing to actively take steps necessary to move from poverty to self-sufficiency.

To join, applicants meet income, residence, and other program requirements, and every adult in the household commits to the steps toward self-sufficiency.
